 TEMPORARY EXHIBITIONS 2012

Parlour exhibition

 Vintage Toys & Games

A display of Toys and Games, featuring pastimes of about a century ago, has been arranged in the parlour showcase. Included in the colourful array are vintage dolls, toy tea sets, board games and cards. Extra information sheets provide interesting research findings about the tiny Frozen Charlotte doll, sometimes used to cool a cup of tea, and the set of Tarot cards from the museum’s collection.

Bedroom Exhibit

In the Footsteps of the Speids

Before becoming a Historical Society, Museum and Art Gallery Uplands was the family home of Mr. Arthur Speid, his wife, and three daughters. This makes it an ideal setting for guests to learn and explore the life and times of a Townships family while learning about our town’s history.

This Exhibit is part of a collaborative project with Uplands Cultural & Heritage Center to offer educational activities to local schools.

Exhibition Room

Chores of Yore in the Great Outdoors

The exhibition  explores outdoor work throughout the seasons in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Eastern Townships has a history as rich as its natural resources and people knew how to benefit from these resources in order to survive and prosper through the many weather conditions this land has to offer.

Chores of Yore in the Great Outdoors invites visitors to revisit the lives of their parents and grandparents by showcasing the tools and equipment that were used in daily chores throughout the seasons. Canadian winters have always been difficult to endure, and woodstoves were essential to keeping a home warm. With the arrival of the cold season came the wood cutting and logging (chainsaws were not available in the 1800s). Tools included saws and axes, several of which are exhibited.

Late winter, early spring was a time to harvest ice, though less common today it was a job which required diverse tools and specific methodology. Of course the remaining warmer seasons were a time for agriculture and gardening. The tools and equipment for farming have come a long way in the last fifty years. Complimented by a series of images from this era, the exhibit shows not only what it took to get the work done, but how it was done back in the day! We invite you to come by to explore.
